2008 Exhibits

February 16 to July 13, 2008
white house in miniature

On display from mid-February through mid-July, the exhibit provides visitors with a look into the rooms and grounds of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The model of the White House, done by John and Jan Zweifel, is 60-feet long and 25-feet wide and was constructed in a one-inch-to-one-foot scale.

The replica, which took 32 years to complete, is a faithful recreation of the president’s home that opens up rooms seldom seen by the public. Details include hand-carved furniture; tiny paintings that match the exact colors of the original works of art; working miniature televisions and clocks; and hundreds of tiny lights which illuminate the chandeliers.

The top floor of the three-story model includes the Lincoln Bedroom, which served as President Lincoln’s office where he signed The Emancipation Proclamation. The second floor includes The Green Room, which Thomas Jefferson used as a dining room; and the bottom floor includes the Map Room, in which President Franklin Roosevelt followed the course of World War II.
