The theme for the 1997 Inaugural was "An American Journey". The Inaugural Committee was responsible for the planning and staging of all the official inaugural events. They worked to prepare guest lists and invitations, they distributed tickets, selected parade units, selected ball and gala entertainers, prepared event lists, provided housing and transportation, built parade reviewing stands and bleachers, arranged the media coverage, authorized the concessions, and marketed a variety of commemorative items including the official program and official medal. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, guest lists, invitations, reports, press articles, newsletters, diagrams, floor plans, schedules, calendars, post cards, and memorabilia (inaugural tickets, badges, credentials, passes, etc.) Scope and Content Note Please note that for Case Number 2013-0848-F, the Clinton Library's "withdrawal sheet" and "withdrawal form" cite Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exemptions as the authority for withholding certain records. Clinton was the first Democratic president in over 50 years to win a second term. President Clinton, under the provisions of the Presidential Inaugural Ceremonies Act, established the 1997 Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) with the assistance of chairman Terence McAuliffe, Ann Dibble Jordan and the deputy director Kathy Webb. This Inaugural Committee was responsible for the planning and staging of all the official inaugural events. The PIC worked to prepare guest lists and invitations, they distributed tickets, selected parade units, selected ball and gala entertainers, prepared event lists, provided housing and transportation, built parade reviewing stands and bleachers, arranged the media coverage, authorized the concessions, and marketed a variety of commemorative items including the official program and official medal. The theme for the 1997 Inaugural was "An American Journey". There were seven huge tents on the capital mall in Washington, D.C. for all the festivities. The guests to the festivities on the capital mall viewed a giant fireworks display; the fireworks were fired from 10 different locations. Some of the entertainers for the Inaugural festivities included Stevie Wonder, Bernadette Peters, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Kenny G, Yo Yo Ma, Trisha Yearwood, Kenny Rogers, Aretha Franklin and the famous Elmo. The casts of the Broadway musicals "Chicago" and "Bring In 'da Noise, Bring In 'da Funk were also there. There were 14 inaugural balls in 1997; two of them were at the Smithsonian and one at the National Air and Space Museum. The Inaugural Committee estimated that around 100,000 people attended the mall festivities, 100,000 people attended the inaugural ceremonies and parade and over 70,000 tickets to the inaugural balls were sold. The records in this collection contain the Official Guide books, Media Guide books, press releases, and Gala booklets. The records also contain inaugural memorabilia that includes invitations, tickets, credentials, parking passes, Inaugural Packets, and Inaugural programs.
