Vice President Al Gore announced his candidacy for president on June 16, 1999, in Carthage, Tennessee. Gore faced democratic challenger, New Jersey senator Bill Bradley. After a successful round of debates Gore won primary contests and claimed the Democratic Nomination for president in 2000. On August 13, 2000, Gore announced that he had selected Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut as his vice presidential running mate. Vice President Gore faced Republican George W. Bush in the 2000 election. Gore narrowly lost the electoral vote (271 – 266), but he won over 500,000 more popular votes. The 2000 election is most remembered for the ballot recount in the state of Florida. On election night, news networks first called Florida for Gore, later retracted the projection, and then called Florida for Bush, before finally stating that the election was too close to project. Vice President Gore contested the election results in Florida and requested a recount. After the Florida Supreme Court and U.S. Federal Supreme Court’s involvement in the recount, and much controversy, on December 13, 2000, Gore conceded the election.
