This collection contains correspondence between President Clinton and Sarah McClendon, a Senior White House reporter. The records include newsletters, notes, and memos between White House staff regarding drafts of letters from the President to Sarah McClendon.

The materials in FOIA 2006-0537-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. FOIA request 2006-0537-F contains correspondence between President Clinton and Sarah McClendon, a Senior White House Reporter. The correspondence is in the form of letters or notes. Additional records included are drafts of letters from the President to Sarah McClendon, newsletters, and notes and memos between members of the White House staff relating to the drafting of this correspondence. The letters from the President to Sarah McClendon consist of ceremonial greetings such as happy birthday greetings; get well wishes and letters of appreciation for her journalistic efforts. There also is a letter from the President thanking her for the copies of her book, Mr. President, Mr. President! Correspondence from Sarah McClendon consists of a letter of appreciation where she thanks the President for naming her to the Advisory Commission for the WWII memorial. Notes to the President are brief transmittals written at the top of copies of her newsletter, “Sarah McClendon’s Washington Report,” that were sent to the White House. Other related material includes a letter from Stephanie Street, Assistant to the President, Director of Presidential Scheduling, responding to an invitation Sarah McClendon had sent to the White House for President Clinton to attend a dedication for a new home for homeless women veterans.

Records that were responsive to this FOIA were found in two collection areas - Clinton Presidential Records: WHORM Alpha Files; and Clinton Presidential Records: WHORM Subject Files. WHORM Subject and WHORM Alpha files are processed at the document level. The WHORM Alpha File was compiled be the White House Office of Records Management and is a series of documents arranged by name of persons, organizations, or events. The WHORM Subject File was compiled by the White House Office of Records Management and is a series of categories designated by a letter/number combination. Access to Clinton Presidential Records is governed by the Presidential Records Act (PRA) (44 USC 2201) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) (5 USC 552, as amended) and therefore, records may be restricted in whole or in part in accordance with legal exemptions.

Official records of William Jefferson Clinton’s presidency are housed at the Clinton Presidential Library and administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) under the provisions of the Presidential Records Act (PRA).
