Scope and Content Note The materials in FOIA 2007-1757-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. FOIA request 2007-1757-F contains materials from First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s files on NASA or Outer Space. Records responsive to this FOIA were found entirely in the White House Staff and Office files. In the First Lady’s Office Ann Bartley’s file contain presentations concerning NASA’s National Service Office (NSO), a branch of NASA concerned with community outreach. In the First Lady’s Office’s Domestic Policy Council, Neera Tanden’s materials contain records concerning a math and science education themed visit by the First Lady at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School and the First Lady’s announcement of Lieutenant Colonel Eileen Collins as the first female NASA space shuttle commander. Both of these events occurred in March 1998. Also in the First Lady’s Office, Michael O’Mary’s files contain additional documents concerning the announcement of Lieutenant Colonel Collins’ appointment Clinton Presidential Library’s web site as space shuttle commander. In addition, Chief of Staff to the First Lady, Melanne Verveer’s files, contain talking points regarding American aviator Jerrie Cobb’s campaign to be sent into outer space. Record Type Textual System of Arrangement Records that are responsive to this FOIA were found in one collection area—Clinton Presidential Records: White House Staff and Office Files. As policy, Staff and Office files are processed at the folder level, that is, individual documents are not selected and removed from a folder for processing. While this method maintains folder integrity, it frequently results in the incidental processing of documents that are not wholly responsive to the subject area.
