His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan died February 7, 1999. President Clinton traveled to Amman, Jordan for the funeral on February 8, 1999. A large number of foreign dignitaries and heads-of-state from around the world also attended including President Suleyman Demirel. There were no bilateral meetings held and President Clinton was provided briefing materials only in the case that he should happen to have a conversation rather than working toward a planned conversation. Though Clinton is noted as having greeted President Demirel there is no record that they had conversation on any topics of substance.
