This collection consists of records relating to an August 18, 1999 telephone call between Turkish President Suleyman Demirel and President Clinton. A tremendous earthquake, later measured at 7.6 on the Richter scale, occurred near Izmit, Turkey in the early morning hours of August 17, 1999. The Turkish Government would later announce that an estimated 17,127 people were killed in the earthquake. President Clinton called President Demirel on August 18, 1999 to offer American assistance with earthquake recovery and to offer condolences on the loss of life
