Scope and Content Note The materials in FOIA 2019-0130-F are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. Chris Hani was the General-Secretary of the South-African Communist Party and was a fierce opponent of the apartheid government of South Africa. He was shot and killed on Easter Sunday, April 10th, 1993 by Janusz Walus, a white anti-communist. Mr. Hani’s murder led to mass protests and demonstrations, until Nelson Mandela addressed the nation four days later to call for a national day of mourning. Almost exactly a year later, April 27th, 1994, South-Africa held its first multi-racial elections in which Nelson Mandela was elected President.
