9 folders, approximately 886 pages

This collection consists of records related to the April 1993 assassination of Chris Hani. It contains press briefings, talking points, and condolence letters to Mr. Hani’s widow from various governments and press guidance.

The materials in FOIA 2019-0130-F are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. Chris Hani was the General-Secretary of the South-African Communist Party and was a fierce opponent of the apartheid government of South Africa. He was shot and killed on Easter Sunday, April 10th, 1993 by Janusz Walus, a white anti-communist. Mr. Hani’s murder led to mass protests and demonstrations, until Nelson Mandela addressed the nation four days later to call for a national day of mourning. Almost exactly a year later, April 27th, 1994, South-Africa held its first multi-racial elections in which Nelson Mandela was elected President. The records processed in response to this FOIA request include press briefings, talking points, and condolence letters to Mr. Hani’s widow from various governments and press guidance. The majority of these records related to this FOIA case are closed for national security reasons.
