Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request 2017-0493-F was for records pertaining to Australian Prime Minister John Howard. Per the requester, the search was limited to White House Staff and Office files. This collection includes background materials, schedules, memorandums, emails, press releases, press pool reports, press conference transcripts, talking points, remarks, and speech transcripts pertaining to President Clinton’s trip to Australia in November 1996 and the President’s participation in the 1996 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit meeting in the Philippines. During this 1996 APEC trip, President Clinton visited Hawaii and Alaska and met with the royal family and government officials of Thailand. This collection also includes memorandums, schedules, and press releases pertaining to Prime Minister Howard’s visit to the United States and meeting with President Clinton in 1999, and Prime Minister Howard’s remarks on climate change delivered in the Australian Parliament on November 20, 1997. John Howard became Prime Minister of Australia in 1996 as leader of the Liberal/National Coalition. He was first elected to the Australian Parliament in 1974, and was Leader of the Opposition from 1985- 1989 and 1995-1996. He served as Prime Minister until the 2007 Australian federal election, when the opposition Labor Party defeated the Liberal/National Coalition and Howard lost his seat in the Australian House of Representatives. Prime Minister Howard is known for supporting gun control legislation in the aftermath of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, introducing a value added tax in 2000, and overseeing the deployment of Australian military forces in International Force East Timor (INTERFET) in response to civil unrest in East Timor following the 1999 East Timor independence referendum. During his third and fourth terms as Prime Minister, Howard authorized Australian military support for the Global War on Terrorism, including the 2001 War in Afghanistan and 2003 invasion of Iraq. He retired from politics following his defeat in the 2007 Australian federal election.
