The materials in FOIA 2019-0902-F are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. The researcher submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for records related to Brian Sheridan and the former Yugoslavia. Specifically, the researcher requested a subject line search using the terms: Kosovo, Kosovo Liberation Army, Macedonia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Serbia-Montenegro, NLA, National Liberation Army, Ali Ahmeti, Skopje, Southern Serbia, Presevo Valley, and UCPMB. Records to be opened are from the National Security Council’s Cable, Email, and Records Management System. The collection dates from October 1998 to November 1999. From 1993 to 1995 Brian Sheridan served as a Deputy Secretary of Defense for Drug Enforcement Policy and Support. On March 15, 1999 President Clinton nominated Sheridan to be Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict replacing H. Allen Holmes (See 2019-0910-F). Sheridan served in this role from 1999 to 2001. While in the office Sheridan’s focus was on five primary areas. Those five were peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance, counter drug operations, counter terrorism, Latin American security issues, and special operations. After 2001, Sheridan left government employment and moved into the defense industry working for BAE Systems and Bechtel where he remains as of April 2022. Records responsive to this FOIA request include a cable related to Kosovo relief operations and an email related to the Department of Defense Airlift for Kosovo. A significant number of records in this collection remain closed for national security reasons.
