This collection consists of email between staff regarding Daniel Seals’ application for an internship. Seals was granted a Presidential Management Internship in 1997, during which he served as an aide to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce and as an economic fellow for the United States Senate. The collection also includes email correspondence between Seals and Sue Bachtel, Special Assistant to the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, regarding a possible position.

Daniel Seals, the son of a former Chicago Bears football player, was raised in Illinois. After graduating college he spent a period teaching English in Japan. Following his return to the United States he studied International Economics and Japanese Studies in Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Seals received a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1997 and was nominated for a Presidential Management Internship. During his internship Seals served as an Aide to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce and as an economic fellow for the United States Senate. After leaving his internship, Seals returned to school at the University of Chicago and began working in a number of economics and consulting jobs. In 2006, 2008, and 2010, Seals was unsuccessful at winning the 10th District U.S. congressional seat. Seals was named Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in May 2011. Records that are responsive to this FOIA request were found in one collection—Clinton Presidential Records: Automated Records Management System [Email]. The Automated Records Management System (ARMS) is a database that contains email records of the Executive office of the President. This system maintained unclassified Presidential record email. The ARMS dataset is comprised of 6 sub-series of email records called “Buckets.” The buckets include NPR, OPD, POTUS, WHO, CEA, and Default. ARMS emails are arranged chronologically by creation date.

Collection is open to all researchers. Access to Clinton Presidential Records is governed by the Presidential Records Act (PRA) (44 USC 2201) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) (5 USC 552 as amended) and therefore records may be restricted in whole or in part in accordance with legal exemptions.
