David Rockefeller, Sr. was the longtime president and chief executive of Chase Manhattan Bank. Rockefeller was born in Manhattan, New York June 12, 1915. At age 37, this heir of John D. Rockefeller was one of the richest men in the world. He graduated from Harvard in 1936 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. During World War II he served in United States Army conducting military intelligence in North Africa. In 1946, after service in the U.S. Embassy in France, Rockefeller began working at Chase National Bank. He retired from the bank in 1981 but then continued a long and storied support of philanthropic endeavors. Rockefeller donated millions of dollars to Harvard and the Museum of Modern Art. Likewise he was a generous donor to the Council on Foreign Relations where he also served as Chairman from 1970 to 1985. In 1998, President Clinton awarded Rockefeller the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Rockefeller died in his home in Pocantico Hills, New York March 20, 2017. He was 101.
