This collection consists of records from the files of Leanne Shimabukuro, Associate Director of Domestic Policy from 1997-1999 and Special Assistant to the President from 2000-2001. Leanne Shimabukuro served as Associate Director of Domestic Policy from 1997-1999 and Special Assistant to the President from 2000-2001. While in her position within the Domestic Policy Council, Shimabukuro specialized in issues relating to crime, including guns, gangs, drug and alcohol abuse, and youth violence. Her records contain records from President Clinton’s first term (1993-1996) that were used to help inform her policy proposals and daily work during the second term of the administration. This collection highlights various topics relating to crime in the United States during the 1990s. In particular, Shimabukuro worked on issues related to the automatic weapons ban, the Brady Bill, the Crime Bill, gun control and strategy, VAWA [Violence Against Women Act], missing and abused children, school and youth violence, hate crimes, racial profiling, police brutality, law enforcement issues and budgets, the COPS program, elder abuse, drunk driving, crack and cocaine sentencing, money laundering, international drug issues, sex offenders, gun buyback programs, internet crime, bioterrorism, and agency positions on DPC draft policy and congressional legislation.
