It contains notes, memorandums, correspondence, speech drafts and legislative policy plans for the final year of the Clinton administration. It topics include: the budgeting and appropriations process, campaign finance reform, civil rights issues, crime and gun control, education, the Family and Medical Leave Act, food safety, gay rights, hate crimes legislation, health care, immigration, philanthropy, national service, tobacco lawsuits, welfare to work issues, and school shootings. The collection also contains extensive notes, drafts and mark-ups for President Clinton’s 1999 State of the Union speech. Scope and Content Note Eric Liu was the Deputy Director of Domestic Policy in the White House from 1999 – 2000. A 1990 graduate of Yale University, Liu began his government service as the legislative assistant to Senator David L. Boren of Oklahoma, writing some of the Senator's congressional speeches on foreign affairs and health care issues. From 1993 to early in 1994, Mr. Liu wrote speeches for Secretary of State Warren Christopher and for President Clinton’s January 1994 NATO Summit meeting in Brussels, Belgium. Hailed by the New York Times and by Newsweek magazine as the “Voice of Generation X”, Liu left the White House in 1994 to attend Harvard Law School. After acquiring his law degree in 1999, he returned to the White House as the Deputy Director of Domestic Policy and served in that role until the end of the Clinton administration. Mr. Liu has authored a number of books including “The True Patriot” a call for a merger of progressive political ideals with increased patriotism, “Guiding Lights: How to Mentor and Find Life's Purpose”, which was named the official book of National Mentoring Month, and “The Accidental Asian: Notes of a Native Speaker”, a New York Times Notable Book. In 2002, the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland named Liu as one of their “100 Global Leaders of Tomorrow." This Series contains notes, memorandums, correspondence, speech drafts and legislative policy negotiations from the final year of the Clinton Administration.
