This collection consists of records related to Eric Schmidt that date to his time as the Chairman and CEO of the software company Novell (1997 to 2001). This collection consists of correspondence concerning universal internet access, digital democracy, NetDay, and export rules. In addition to photographs of the Novell Campus in San Jose, California, the collection also includes correspondence, scheduling materials, and lists of invitees concerning the 1999 National Education Summit, the World Economic Forum in 2000, and holiday parties.

This collection consists of electronic records concerning correspondence or communication with Eric Schmidt. From 1997 until 2001 Eric Schmidt served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and board chairman of the American software firm, Novell, Inc. As the CEO of Novell, Schmidt was a member of the Business Software Alliance, a trade group that advocated for government policies concerning the international growth of the software industry and software theft. Schmidt also served as the Chair of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council. This collection contains emails concerning Eric Schmidt’s attendance at an informal reception for CEO’s and foreign heads of state at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2000. This collection also contains emails concerning invitations for Schmidt and other business leaders to meet with the President. This collection also contains emails concerning invitations for Eric Schmidt to State Dinners held at the White House. As Chair of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council, Schmidt emailed the results of a study committee concerning the “Internet in the Evolving Information Infrastructure” to the White House. This collection also contains emails concerning Schmidt’s role as a tech CEO for subjects related to e-commerce and the digital divide.

These records are stored in Search and Access Sets (SAS) that represent their originating computer program. The Automated Records Management System (ARMS) is a database that contains email records of the Executive Office of the President. This system maintained unclassified Presidential email. The Tape Restoration Project (TRP) is a database that contains restored emails from the Automated Records Management System (ARMS) from July 1994 through June of 2000. This system maintained unclassified Presidential email. Lotus Notes is a database that contains files created in the Lotus Notes system. The Lotus Notes system was used as an email management system during the Clinton Administration. This database contains drafts of email, mailing lists, attachments, and other items likely intended for email. The White House database (WHODB) is a database of White House events and individuals that attended those events. The database also includes a log of individuals that received White House greeting correspondence. Data was entered and maintained by the Office of Correspondence, Social Office, and Office of Public Liaison. The Electronic WAVES Search System is a log of visitors/appointments to the White House and is arranged by name of visitor there-under by date.

Chapter 22, as amended) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) (5 U.S.C. 552, as amended) and therefore records may be restricted in whole or in part in accordance with legal exemptions.
