Scope and Content Note The materials in FOIA 2019-0160-F (Segment 2) are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Fidel Castro was a Marxist-Leninist Cuban revolutionary who led the 26th of July Movement during the Cuban Revolution and ousting of President of Cuba Fulgencio Batista. Castro was First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961-2011 and President of Cuba until 2008, when his brother Raúl assumed presidential duties. Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016. Materials responsive to this FOIA request include emails mentioning Fidel Castro. The bulk of the responsive records consist of news articles and news wire reports, United States Information Agency foreign news media summaries, White House and State Department press briefings, and miscellaneous electronic newsletters.
