The Free Trade Area of the Americas was a proposed agreement to eliminate or reduce trade barriers among all countries of Central and South America. The proposal was first discussed at the Summit of the Americas in Miami, Florida in November of 1993. The proposal failed to gain any support and the signing deadline of January 1, 2005 passed with no agreement. This collection consists of news articles, various working group meeting schedules and agendas, travel related material, reports to Congress on the status of trade negotiations, summit strategy reports, working group reports and trade ministerial meeting minutes. The majority of these records related to this FOIA case are closed for national security reasons.
