The American College of Sofia in Sofia, Bulgaria was founded in 1860 and is regarded as the oldest American educational institution outside the United States. The college stopped operation in the autumn of 1942 after the pro-Axis authorities ousted the administrators once Bulgaria declared war on the United States in December 1941. In 1947 American College's entire property was confiscated after the war ended and Bulgaria became a communist state, and the campus was used as the office of the Bulgarian State Police. The college was reopened in September 1992. Much of the old campus and many of the pre-World War II American College buildings have since then been given back to the college, yet parts of the campus are still occupied by the Police Academy. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the American College of Sofia in October 1998 and made a speech while there. This collection contains records regarding the First Lady’s visit to the American College of Sofia including background on the college and talking points for the visit.
