The collection dates from March 1996 to November 1996. Ambassador John K. Menzies came to foreign relations from the academic community. He was an assistant to the dean of graduate students at the University of California, Santa Barbara before entering the diplomatic corps. His career began in the early 1970s and Menzies served in Hungary, East Germany, and Bulgaria among other places. During the Clinton administration, Menzies was Acting Deputy Coordinator of East European Assistance at the United States Mission to the United Nations. In October 1994, Menzies took the position of Deputy Chief of Mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina and rose quickly to Chief of Mission. Menzies was appointed by President Clinton in October 1995 to be U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina and was credentialed January 7, 1996. He served in this position until December 15, 1996. He retired from foreign service and was the Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace for several years before returning to academia. Menzies earned degrees in German and History from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and graduate degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. He died in March 2022 at the age of 73.
