Scope and Content Note Jose Cerda III worked in a number of offices and positions during his time in the White House. He served as Special Assistant in the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in 1993, as Director of Interagency Affairs in the Office of Public and Legislative Affairs in 1994, as Senior Policy Analyst for the Domestic Policy Council in 1995, and (after a few years away working as director for the City of Chicago’s Empowerment Zone) as Special Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy in 1998 and 1999. Before his time in the White House, Cerda worked as a Legislative Assistant from 1989-1992 for former Representative George E. Sangmeister (D-IL) and then for the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign and Presidential Transition Team on domestic policy issues. He is a graduate of Harvard University. This collection covers Jose Cerda’s time working for the Domestic Policy Council on crime issues and also includes records from Cerda’s time in both ONDCP and Legislative Affairs. It highlights topics relating to domestic and international drugs, domestic violence, VAWA (Violence Against Women Act), mandatory minimums, the juvenile justice system, prisons, legislative proposals for crime, drugs, and terrorism, budget and office structure of the ONDCP, Law Enforcement budgets, Police unions, state crimes issues, the assault weapons ban, gun control, and youth violence.
