Scope and Content Note This collection contains the files of Karen Tramontano, who served as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Erskine Bowles and John Podesta from 1997 to 2001. Within the Chief of Staff’s Office, Tramontano played a key role in the administration. She was responsible for managing domestic policy initiatives, including labor, trade, economy and the 2000 U.S. Census. Tramontano played an important part in managing labor issues and shaping trade policy during a time when globalization and trade agreements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), were significant topics. She worked closely with labor organizations, businesses, and government agencies to ensure that trade policies balanced economic growth and workers' rights. Due to her past leadership experience in the labor movement, Tramontano often acted as a bridge between labor groups and the administration to ensure worker concerns were addressed.
