During Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign former Congressman Les Aspin was selected to be an advisor on defense matters. Later he was chosen by President Clinton to be Secretary of Defense and confirmed by the Senate in early 1993. Aspin resigned, citing health reasons, as Secretary of Defense December 15, 1993. Aspin served until the confirmation of his replacement and ended his term as Secretary of Defense on February 3, 1994. This trip to South Korea was to attend the 25th Annual Security Consultative Meeting with his South Korean counterpart and to visit troops stationed in Korea. It was part of a longer trip that included a stop in Japan.
