Biographical Note Before her position in the White House, Smith served as an assistant to political strategy and assistant to the press secretary on President Clinton’s reelection campaign in 1996. She then worked at the national nonprofit Welfare to Work Partnership before joining the Clinton Administration’s Domestic Policy Council. After her Domestic Policy Council position, she accepted a role as associate counsel in the White House Counsel Office from April 2000 until January 2001. In 2001, Smith moved to the private sector and joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where she focused on government investigations and securities. In 2005, she became senior counsel at Tyco International but later left to work full time on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. She later transitioned to Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign team in the general election. Smith returned to government during the Obama administration, serving as counsel in the Justice Department’s Civil Division from 2010 to 2012. She later became General Counsel for the Illinois Department of Insurance, with responsibilities that included legal implementation of the Affordable Care Act. She subsequently became the Principal Deputy Director at the Indian Health Service. In addition to her government and corporate work, Smith has been active in professional legal organizations. She has served on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association (ABA) from 2009 to 2012. In 2012, she received the Spirit of Excellence award from ABA. She was elected ABA president for the 2023-2024 term, becoming the first Native American woman chosen for that position. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from Loyola University of Chicago, magna cum laude, and a J.D. from the University of Chicago School of Law, cum laude.
