Makeba was a world renowned singer and artist from South Africa. Makeba was forced into exile from South Africa and lived the majority of her life in Europe. Open records include email discussions related to scheduling a presidential message for the Kora All Africa Music Awards as well as cables and email related to Makeba’s appearances and events. Scope and Content Note The materials in FOIA 2021-0242-F (Segment 1) are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. Mama Africa, Zenzile Miriam Makeba, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa March 4, 1932. Makeba began singing in the 1950s, first with South African groups the Cuban Brothers and the Manhattan Brothers. Then in 1956 the song “Lovely Lies”, sung by Makeba, was the first South African song to chart on the U.S. Billboard Top 100. In the late 1950s, Makeba met Harry Belafonte in London. Belafonte assisted Makeba in the industry and about 1959 assisted her move to New York, New York. In 1960, her mother and two family members were killed in the Sharpeville Massacre and Makeba’s passport was later revoked by the South African government. Makeba lived in exile from South Africa and would not return until invited by Nelson Mandela in 1991. Mama Africa had a flourishing career and toured internationally for decades. With Harry Belafonte, Makeba won a Grammy Award in 1965. About 1968, Makeba was denied a Visa in the United States and moved to Guinea, later to Belgium. She did not return to the U.S. until 1987. She died of a heart attack following a concert in Italy in 2008. Records in this FOIA collection include emails and cables related to Makeba performing and the funeral of Kwame Ture. This collection dates from April 1996 to September 2000. Record Type Textual System of Arrangement Records that are responsive to this FOIA request were found in these collection areas—Clinton Presidential Records: ARMS Emails and Clinton Presidential Records: NSC Cable, Email, and Records Management Systems. The Automated Records Management System (ARMS) is a database that contains email records of the Executive Office of the President. This system maintained unclassified Presidential email. The ARMS database consisted of six sub-series of email records called "buckets." The buckets generally represented a specific White House office. The buckets were titled: NPR for National Performance Review, OPD for Office of Policy Development, POTUS for President of the United States, WHO for White House Office, CEA for Council of Economic Advisers, and Default for emails not associated with an office. The NSC bucket, emails to or from the National Security Council was created after the emails were transferred to the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration. ARMS email are arranged by topic, there-under by bucket, and there-under chronologically by creation date. Access Collection is open to all researchers. Access to Clinton Presidential Records is governed by the Presidential Records Act (PRA) (44 U.S.C. Chapter 22, as amended) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) (5 U.S.C. 552, as amended) and therefore records may be restricted in whole or in part in accordance with legal exemptions.
