FOIA request 2006-1131-F contains records on National Security Council (NSC) meetings, including Principals Committee (PC), Deputies Committee (DC), and Counterterrorism Security (CSG) meetings from August 1998 to January 2001, regarding Al-Qaeda, Afghanistan, or the Taliban. The 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings occurred on August 7, 1998. Hundreds of people were killed in simultaneous truck bomb explosions at the United States embassies in the major East African cities of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya. The attacks, linked to local members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and the U.S. air strike response, brought Osama bin Laden, Al-Qaeda, and the Taliban to the attention of the U.S. public for the first time. Immediately after the embassy bombings, the NSC increased the number and frequency of interagency meetings regarding the state of affairs in Afghanistan.
