This collection contains press statements about the delegation sent to attend Tambo’s funeral and transcripts of remarks given at the funeral. Scope and Content Note The materials in FOIA 2020-0232-F (Segment 2) are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. The researcher submitted a request for records related to the death of African National Congress National Chairman, Oliver Tambo. Oliver Tambo was a South African activist, politician, and antiapartheid revolutionary who served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1967 to 1991, while exiled in London. He returned to South Africa in 1990, but due to a stroke he suffered in 1989, he was unable to fulfill his duties as President much longer. He resigned in 1991, at which time Nelson Mandela became the President of the ANC. Tambo passed away on April 24, 1993, at age 75, from complications related to his stroke. The assets in this collection consist of press statements about the Presidential delegation sent to attend Tambo’s funeral. The 13-member delegation was led by Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala, and included Reverend Jesse Jackson, Dr. Maya Angelou, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Princeton N. Lyman, American Ambassador to South Africa, and White House State Department staff. There are also transcripts of remarks given by Secretary Shalala at Tambo’s funeral on May 2, 1993.
