The collection dates from January 1997 to September 2000. Ambassador Philip Seth Goldberg holds the rank of Career Ambassador. He began his foreign service career as a liaison between the city of New York and the United Nations. During the Clinton administration, Goldberg was–from 1994 to 1996–the United States Department of State Bosnia Desk Officer and Special Assistant to Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. In 1996 Goldberg transitioned to Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State and in 1998 became Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State. He led the transition from the Clinton administration to the George W. Bush administration and then went to serve as Deputy Chief of Mission in Chile. Goldberg has since served as Ambassador to Bolivia, the Philippines, Cuba, Columbia, and is currently nominated to the U.S. Senate (May 2022) to be Ambassador to South Korea. A significant number of records in this collection remain closed for national security reasons.
