Ryutaro Hashimoto was elected Prime Minister of Japan on January 11, 1996. He served as Prime Minister until his resignation in 1998. Hashimoto had a long career in Japanese politics. Between 1963 and 2005 Hashimoto served as a member of the House of Representatives while also holding at times as Minister of Transportation, Minister of Health, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry; Minister of Finance, and Deputy Prime Minister. He retired from politics in 2005. Ryutaro Hashimoto was born July 29, 1937 in Soja, Japan and Died July 1, 2006 in Tokyo, Japan. Records released in this collection include press guidance, emails noting the Japanese requested the meeting, and records related to a visit to the U.S. by foreign minister Ikeda. This collection dates from January 1996.
