This collection contains records regarding a telephone call between President Clinton and Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto of Japan on December 16, 1996. Initially, December 15 had been proposed as the date of the call, but scheduling issues led to its postponement to the next day. Prime Minister Hashimoto was the head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and had been elected to office in January of that year, after the resignation of his predecessor Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama. After the LDP lost seats in the 1998 election, Prime Minister Hashimoto resigned. The new LDP President, Foreign Minister Keizō Obuchi, succeeded him. At the time of the call, the ongoing Asian Economic Crisis was a central concern to both President Clinton and Prime Minister Hashimoto.
