The collection contains records related to a telephone call between President Clinton and Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto on June 16, 1998. Prime Minister Hashimoto was the head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and had been elected to office in January of that year, after the resignation of his predecessor Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama. After the LDP lost seats in the July1998 election, Prime Minister Hashimoto resigned. The new LDP President, Foreign Minister Keizō Obuchi, succeeded him. At the time of the call, which took place roughly a month before the Prime Minister’s resignation, the worsening state of the Japanese economy was a major concern for the two heads of state. The records released in response to this case include planning and logistical communications for the call, transmittal materials for the telcon, and press guidance and statements afterwards.
