This collection consists of records related to a June 23, 1998 telephone conversation between President Clinton and Ryutaro Hashimoto, Prime Minister of Japan. Open records include emails related to scheduling of the phone call. President Clinton wanted to discuss with Prime Minister Hashimoto the Asian financial crisis. The collection also includes memorandum, forms, and administrative paperwork related to records management in the office.

On June 23, 1998, President Clinton called Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. Records released in this collection date from the period June 23-June 26. Open records include emails and documents related to scheduling of the phone call and records management. Ryutaro Hashimoto was elected Prime Minister of Japan on January 11, 1996. He served as Prime Minister until his resignation in 1998. Hashimoto had a long career in Japanese politics. Between 1963 and 2005 Hashimoto served as a member of the House of Representatives while also holding at times as Minister of Transportation, Minister of Health, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry; Minister of Finance, and Deputy Prime Minister. He retired from politics in 2005. Ryutaro Hashimoto was born July 29, 1937 in Soja, Japan and Died July 1, 2006 in Tokyo, Japan. A majority of records responsive to this collection remain closed for national security reasons.
