In December of 1996 Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA)–or Tupac Amaru–raided the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru. The group was able to take approximately 500 people hostage and held them for five months. Records to be opened include emails, memorandum of telephone conversation, and administrative documents. December 17, 1996 a Peruvian rebel group known as Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA)–or Tupac Amaru–raided the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru. The group struck during a celebration of the 63rd birthday of Japanese Emperor Akihito. Tupac Amaru was able to capture nearly 500 hostages, many of them Japanese citizens. Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori met in Toronto, Canada on February 3, 1997 to discuss the ongoing hostage situation. Prime Minister Hashimoto wanted to discuss the situation with President Clinton as President Fujimori would be visiting Washington, DC after the trip to Canada. The hostage situation ended April 22, 1997 when the Peruvian military raided the embassy compound. All 14 rebels and one hostage died in the raid. Ryutaro Hashimoto was elected Prime Minister of Japan on January 11, 1996. He served as Prime Minister until his resignation in 1998. Hashimoto had a long career in Japanese politics. Between 1963 and 2005 Hashimoto served as a member of the House of Representatives while also holding at times as Minister of Transportation, Minister of Health, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry; Minister of Finance, and Deputy Prime Minister. He retired from politics in 2005. Ryutaro Hashimoto was born July 29, 1937 in Soja, Japan and Died July 1, 2006 in Tokyo, Japan. Records released in this collection include emails noting the Japanese requested the meeting and records related to White House scheduling and operations. This collection dates from February 1997. A majority of records responsive to this collection remain closed for national security reasons.
