This collection contains records from the National Security Council Records Management System regarding Pol Pot, the leader of the Cambodian communist guerrilla force known as the Khmer Rouge. The records in this collection consist of scheduling and distribution memos, correspondence, routing documents, and distribution receipts, though the majority of records for this FOIA request are closed for National Security.

The materials in FOIA 2025-0947-F are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related material.

Born in 1925 with the name Saloth Sar, Pol Pot was a revolutionary leader of the Cambodian communist guerrilla force known as the Khmer Rouge. The radical policy changes implemented following the Khmer Rouge’s overthrow of the Cambodian government in 1975 had severe consequences for the Cambodian people, including forced evacuations, mass labor camps, widespread executions and other severe human rights violations. Neighboring Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1978, leading to Pol Pot’s overthrow in 1979, after which he went into exile. In 1985 he retired as leader of the Khmer Rouge, but remained an advisor closely involved in the group’s actions. In 1997, he was ousted from the organization’s leadership and put under house arrest. He died in 1998. This collection primarily contains correspondence, memoranda, meeting notes, and routing documents regarding Pol Pot, from the National Security Council Records Management System.

The majority of records related to this FOIA case are closed for national security reasons.
