The President’ Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History was established by President Clinton by Executive Order 13090 on June 29, 1998. The General Services Administration (GSA) became the federal partner in funding the Commission. The members served without compensation, but the GSA provided their travel costs. The Commission’s mandate was to make recommendations to the President on ways to recognize and celebrate the contributions and roles of American women throughout the history of the United States. The Commission submitted a report to the President on March 1, 1999. The President extended the Commission’s term until December, 2000, allowing the members to establish public-private partnerships for implementing the commission’s recommendations. The Commission was led by Co-Chairs Beth Newburger, Associate Administrator for Communications, GSA, and Ann Lewis, White House Director of Communications 1997-1999, and Counselor to the President 1999-2001. The members of the Commission included Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, J. Michael Cook, Dr. Barbara Goldsmith, LaDonna Harris, Gloria Johnson, Dr. Elaine Kim, Dr. Ellen Ochoa, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, and Irene Wurtzel. The Commission held ten meetings during its tenure in regions around the country, with the last meeting being held November 15, 2000, in Washington, DC. The records in this collection include letters, email, reports, notes, clippings, pamphlets, travel vouchers, pictures, and books.

This collection is arranged alphabetically. Folder titles that begin with a date regarding meetings in U.S. cities are filed alphabetically by the city. Otherwise, they are filed alphabetically by topic. In these Commission files there were several 3½” diskettes containing various documents and reports. The materials from these disks have been processed electronically and are available for research in an electronic format.

Collection is open to all researchers. Access to Clinton Presidential Records is governed by the Presidential Records Act (PRA) (44 U.S.C. Chapter 22, as amended) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) (5 U.S.C. 552, as amended) and therefore records may be restricted in whole or in part in accordance with legal exemptions.
