Researchers should consult the archivist about related material. This collection contains records regarding Roy Cohn, born February 20, 1927, a lawyer and prosecutor from New York. Cohn graduated from Columbia Law School at age 20. He worked as a clerk for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York before being admitted to the New York Bar. Cohn served as an assistant U.S. attorney who helped prosecute members of the American Communist Party including Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. He worked as chief counsel under Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Lavender Scare. In 1954 Cohn resigned from McCarthy’s staff and entered private practice as an attorney in New York where he represented several high-profile clients including Donald Trump. Cohn had close political ties to Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and worked on Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign. Cohn was disbarred in 1986 for unethical and unprofessional conduct. He passed away on August 2, 1986, due to complications from AIDS.
