(2008-0097-F) Rupert Murdoch and President Clinton

11 folders, 127 pages

This collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, and faxes dealing with the relationship between media mogul Rupert Murdoch and President Clinton. Topics covered include Murdoch’s favorable comments about Clinton’s 1996 State of the Union speech and his being honored as the first recipient of the Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award. However, there is very little in the way of factual information about what may have transpired between Murdoch and Clinton in the matter of meetings and personal exchanges.

The materials in 2008-0097-F are a selective body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. FOIA 2008-0097-F contains records dealing with correspondence, memos, drafts, faxes, and emails about Rupert Murdoch and the Clinton Administration. The White House Office of Records Management (WHORM) contains correspondence, memoranda, and faxes focusing on such topics as Murdoch’s participation in a White House conference on children and television and the role of parents in determining the viewing habits of their children, birthday greetings from the President and First Lady to Murdoch, Murdoch’s favorable comments about Clinton’s 1996 State of the Union speech, and his being honored as the first recipient of the Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award.

Records that were responsive to this FOIA request were found in four collection areas—Clinton Presidential Records: WHORM Alpha Files, Clinton Presidential Records: WHORM Alpha Project, Clinton Presidential Records: WHORM Subject Files, and Clinton Presidential Records: WHORM (OP). The White House Office of Records Management (WHORM) contains a variety of series created to organize and track documents and correspondence. The WHORM Alpha File was compiled by the White House Office of Records Management from 1993-1996 and is a series of documents arranged by name of persons, organizations, or events. The WHORM Subject file was compiled by the White House Office of Records Management and is a series of categories designated by a letter/number combination. In addition, there are WHORM, WHORM Counsel, WHORM (CL), WHORM (OP), WHORM (Too Late), WHORM (Various Offices), and WHORM (Alpha Project) series. WHORM files are processed at the document level. FOIA 2008-0097-F includes WHORM records from these subject codes: [MC003] [Briefings - Conferences, White House] [ME001-02] [Birthday Greetings] [PE002] [Employment – Appointments] [SP230-96] [State of the Union, 1996] [UT001] [Communications – Telecommunications].
