This FOIA contains records relating to Ambassador Nancy Soderberg and the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, particularly the war in Kosovo from 1997 to 2001. Ambassador Soderberg served as Staff Director and Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, the third-ranking official on the National Security Council (NSC), from 1993 to 1997. President Clinton then appointed her as the Alternate Representative to the United Nations, where she served until the end of the administration in 2001. Ambassador Soderberg’s staff files regarding the conflicts in Yugoslavia were previously processed for FOIA 2008-0994-F Segment 2. The additional materials processed for this case consist of NSC Cables and Emails. The Cables date from July 1997 through November 2000. They primarily concern UN discussions, especially with the Security Council, regarding the escalating crisis in Kosovo. Many of these cables were either authored by Ambassador Soderberg or discuss her meetings with other UN representatives. Additionally, there are a several cables from the Ambassador’s visit to Albania in June 1998. The NSC Emails date from December 1997 through April 2000. They mainly discuss planning for NSC Principals Committee and Deputies Committee meetings on the Kosovo crisis, which Ambassador Soderberg often attended as the representative for the US Mission to the United Nations.
