After a brief period in the public sector, career diplomat Victoria Nuland returned to the U.S. Department of State and is currently the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs taking office in May 2021. During the administration of President Barack Obama, Nuland was Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State and then the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. Previously Nuland was United States Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and foreign policy advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney. From 1993 to 1996 Ambassador Nuland was Chief of Staff for Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott. She left her position with Talbott in 1996 to become the Deputy to the Ambassador-at-Large for the Newly Independent States of the Former Soviet Union. She held foreign service positions in Russia, Mongolia, and China. Nuland is a graduate of Brown University. A significant number of records in this collection remain closed for national security reasons.
