The college was founded in 1860 and is considered one of the oldest American educational institutions outside of the United States. Photograph records include the First Lady arriving at the American College of Sofia and preparing to tour the library and computer room on-site. The First Lady greets the hosts for the tour. Present includes Louis “Lou” Perske (Director; American College of Sofia), Maria Angelova (Deputy Director; American College of Sofia), Desislava “Dessi” Strezova (President; student government), and United States Ambassador to Bulgaria Avis Thayer Bohlen. The First Lady greets students present. Following the tour of the library and computer room, the First Lady proceeds to a question-&-answer session. Following the tour of the library & computer room and the question-&-answer session, the First Lady delivers remarks in an expanded question-&-answer session to students in the auditorium at the college. Also present along with the previous individuals includes Donald Pressly (USAID). The First Lady is presented with a book on-stage. Following the event the First Lady departs the auditorium. Additional material processed includes the First Lady delivering remarks to the American community at the Ambassador’s residence in Sofia, Bulgaria. The First Lady also greets Marines present and guests in a rope line. Additional images include a Forum 2000 dinner & visit to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Czech Republic. Audio records includes remarks to the American Community at the Ambassador’s residence and a question-&-answer session with students at the American College of Sofia. Processing is done at the Folder/Contact sheet level and individual item level. While this method maintains folder/contact sheet integrity and audio recording run time, it frequently results in the processing of photographs & audio recordings that are not wholly responsive to the subject area.
