The relationship between United States and Brunei Darussalam began with the Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation in 1850, which remains in effect. The two nations established formal diplomatic relations in 1984 upon Brunei’s full independence from the United Kingdom. In 1994, the United States and Brunei signed a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation. Both countries are founding members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and Brunei hosted the annual meeting in November 2000. Haji Hassanal Bolkiah ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III has been Sultan of Brunei since 1967. The collection contains two thank you letters from President Clinton to the Sultan.
