Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

This collection consists of material regarding Laura D'Andrea Tyson. For three years (1993-1996) Laura Tyson acted as President Clinton’s top economic advisor. During that time span she headed the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) for two years and the National Economic Council (NEC) for one year. The records here deal primarily with U.S. trade relations with Russia and Canada and trade policy in the steel sector. Detailed in nature, the talking points pertain to trade with America’s neighbor to the north and address such issues as lumber imports, possible import restrictions on peanut butter, provincial sales taxes, and disputes over beer.

This collection consists of files maintained by William “Bill” Kincaid, Associate Director for Education Policy on the Domestic Policy Council from 1997 to 2000. Prior to his service in the Clinton Administration, he worked for the Department of Education from 1995 to 1997. The collection consists of records related to charter schools and public school choice, reading and literacy initiatives, improving math and science education, urban and rural education initiatives, fixing failing schools, constructing, renovating, and modernizing schools, connecting schools to the Internet, training, recruiting, and retaining qualified teachers, and racial and ethnic diversity in schools and higher education. This collection also consists of records related to expanding access to higher education through community college initiatives, vocational education, Pell Grants, scholarships, tax credits, financial aid, work-study, and Federal Direct Loans. These materials include correspondence, memorandums, talking points, remarks, reports, publications, news articles, news releases, and handwritten notes.

They are mostly conversational in tone, with some discussion concerning meetings amongst themselves and various counter-parts. The emails also includes brief mentions of welfare reform, livability, education policy and initiatives, and the G8 and NATO summits.

This collection consists of material relating to the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Deep Water Royalty Relief Act (DWRRA) from January 20, 1993 through Jul 15, 1996. The legislation was passed in November 1995, with its guiding principles remaining in effect until 2000. It put into operation a royalty-relief program on producing and non-producing leases located in deep water in the Gulf of Mexico. The collection contains textual and electronic records consisting of correspondence, reports, testimony, memoranda, legislative materials, charts, graphs, and drafts.
