It consists of letters, memos, reports, publications, pamphlets, newspaper articles, and handwritten notes from the Staff Secretary files of John Podesta from 1993 thru 1995 Scope and Content Note This collection contains the files of John Podesta, who served as Special Assistant to the President, Staff Secretary from 1993 to 1995. As the first Staff Secretary, Podesta managed and circulated the paperwork coming in and out of the Oval Office. Previously, he served as an advisor in the U.S. Senate and later formed his own law and lobbying firm with his brother, Anthony. He worked on the 1988 and 1992 Democratic presidential campaigns, helping the candidates with presidential debates and fundraising. In part due to his management skills as Staff Secretary, Podesta was chosen to serve as President Clinton’s fourth chief of staff from 1998 thru 2001. The records in this collection cover a wide range of issues during the first two and a half years of the Clinton presidency, including the economy and fiscal policy, health care reform, gays in the military, welfare reform, foreign affairs (Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti), NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), reinventing government and NPR (National Performance Review), national security information and declassification, and the nomination of Dr. Henry Foster to be U.S. Surgeon General. The records contain letters, memos, reports, publications, pamphlets, newspaper articles and handwritten notes. This series consists of three subseries: Chron Files, Foster Files and Subject Files. The Chron Files are arranged by date order, followed by the Foster Files, which are arranged alphabetically by folder title, and then the Subject Files, which are also arranged alphabetically.
