Over the course of several hours two heavily-armed students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 23 others before taking their own lives. The subject matter includes the Administration’s first responses and follow up, both in policy and strategy; recommended phone calls to victims’ families and local government officials; and speech texts for President Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, Vice President Gore, Education Secretary Richard Riley, and Attorney General Janet Reno. Reaction to the massacre also resulted in a higher emphasis on dealing with the issues of school violence and weapons legislation to include several high-profile conferences on youth violence. Elian, a young Cuban boy, was rescued off the coast of Florida in late 1999 and quickly became embroiled in an international custody dispute. Though the administration initially continued the humanitarian and peacekeeping mission of Operation Restore Hope, it pulled out after the deaths of 18 U.S. troops in the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993 turn public opinion sharply against involvement. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2012-0770-F) Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is a wilderness preservation organization in the United States based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The organization formed in 1983 and is a partner in the Utah Wilderness Coalition, a coalition of organizations nationwide that support federal wilderness designation for deserving public lands in Utah. Their mission is the preservation of the outstanding wilderness at the heart of the Colorado Plateau, and the management of these lands in their natural state for the benefit of all Americans. This collection contains email, memoranda, correspondence, and news articles. It also contains background material relating to Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and a packet of information about the America’s Redrock Wilderness Act. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2012-0774-F) Interior Department Fiscal Year 1996 Appropriations Bill (H.R. 1977) This collection consists of records relating to H.R. 1977 – Department of the Interior and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 1996. The act provided appropriations for the Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, the Forest Service (Department of Agriculture), Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Service), and other smaller agencies. President Clinton vetoed the bill on December 18, 1995. The collection contains correspondence, mostly from Tribal Presidents, Administrators, Chairmen, Chiefs, governors, senators, and congressmen. The files also contain memoranda, statements, and email. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2012-0797-F) Presidential Review Directive 1 on Yugoslavia This collection consists of records, including email, related to Presidential Review Directives (PRD) or Presidential Decision Directives (PDD) corresponding to the former Yugoslavia or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Records in this collection include documents previously declassified as part of the Central Intelligence Agency’s program “Bosnia, Intelligence, and the Clinton Presidency: The Role of Intelligence and Political Leadership in Ending the Bosnian War.” It also includes administrative paperwork such as profile sheets and tracking documents. It includes several publicly released United Nations Security Council decisions regarding the former Yugoslavia. As this collection deals largely with issues of foreign policy and national security a significant portion of the records are closed for reasons of national security.
