Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

TagUse For
AIDS (Disease)Finding aid descriptions of collections having to do with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and/or the treatment of HIV infections. Finding aids also describe policy concerning individuals, groups, or countries seeking treatment or subsidies for AIDs and HIV.

A well known and long serving politician, Chirac was elected President of France in May 1995. Chirac was in the United States in June 1995 to attend the U.S.-EU Summit, one of a number held that year. President Clinton met with President Chirac at the White House on June 14. European Commission President Jacques Santer was included in at least one meeting with Clinton and Chirac.

This collection consists of the files of Eric Liu, the Deputy Director of Domestic Policy from 1999-2000. It contains notes, memorandums, correspondence, speech drafts and legislative policy plans for the final year of the Clinton administration. It topics include: the budgeting and appropriations process, campaign finance reform, civil rights issues, crime and gun control, education, the Family and Medical Leave Act, food safety, gay rights, hate crimes legislation, health care, immigration, philanthropy, national service, tobacco lawsuits, welfare to work issues, and school shootings. The collection also contains extensive notes, drafts and mark-ups for President Clinton’s 1999 State of the Union speech.

This collection consists of records related to Janet Yellen, who was Chairperson of the CEA [Council of Economic Advisors] from 1997-1999. It contains memoranda and briefings concerning details such as economic indicators, industrial production, housing starts, consumer attitudes, consumer price index, inflation, gross domestic product (GDP), interest rates, and stock prices. This collection also consists of email to and from Yellen’s White House email account includes discussion of a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to Product Liability, Kyoto (Climate Change), Federal Involvement in Retail Electricity Competition (FERC), Trade Liberalization, World Trade Organization (WTO) trade wars, the 1997 Asian Economic Crisis, the 1998 Japanese Financial Crisis, and Y2K preparations. Case 2006-0459-F was for the files of National Security Council (NSC) speechwriter Antony Blinken. Documents being released include comprehensive talking points for the April 1997 foreign policy retreat, a briefing memo and talking points for a meeting with Korean President Kim Dae-Jung in November 1998, and notes and drafts of speeches concerning Iraq in February, November, and December 1998.
