Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

AIDS (Disease)Finding aid descriptions of collections having to do with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and/or the treatment of HIV infections. Finding aids also describe policy concerning individuals, groups, or countries seeking treatment or subsidies for AIDs and HIV.

The records primarily consist of speeches related to statements about individuals: eulogies, retirements, award winners, etc. They also highlight speeches or radio addresses regarding health care topics such as children's insurance, teen birth rates, and disability care; as well as domestic policy topics like education, monument dedication, and welfare to work. The collection includes handwritten notes, news clips and articles, press releases, speech drafts, talking points, correspondence, and memos.

This collection consists of records related to Mondev International, Ltd. v United States, a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) arbitration case brought by Mondev International Ltd. before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The collection contains National Security Council records related to the case, including the Notice of Arbitration filed with the Department of State. The United States did not file a response to the Notice of Arbitration until June of 2001, after the end of the Clinton Presidency.

The case, filed before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) was Metalclad Corporation v. United States of Mexico (ARB (AF) 97/1). The collection contains National Security Council records of the three arbitration cases that occurred during the Clinton Administration: Loewen Group, Inc. and Raymond L. Loewen v. Email in this collection primarily consists of correspondence to or from Lael Brainard (Deputy National Economic Adviser and Deputy Assistant to President), John Duncan Jr. (Special Advisor for International Economic Policy and Counselor, National Security Council), Sharon H. Yuan (Confidential Assistant to the Deputy Director of the National Economic Council), and John D.
