Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

TagUse For
AIDS (Disease)Finding aid descriptions of collections having to do with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and/or the treatment of HIV infections. Finding aids also describe policy concerning individuals, groups, or countries seeking treatment or subsidies for AIDs and HIV.

This collection consists of records related to Alfredo Cristiani, Oscar Romero, Pedro Carmona Estanga, Raul Castro, and Roberto D’Aubuisson. It consists solely of emails most of which are in the public domain, such as media reactions and summaries, press materials, news wire reports, and news articles. The bulk of the emails pertain to the controversy over the U.S. Army School of the Americas, now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Alfredo Cristiani served as President of El Salvador from 1989-1994. Oscar Romero was a Roman Catholic priest and Archbishop of San Salvador known for denouncing social injustices and human rights abuses in El Salvador. He was assassinated in 1980 during the Salvadoran Civil War. Pedro Carmona Estanga is a Venezuelan economist and businessman. He was named Acting President of Venezuela from April 12-13, 2002, during a coup d'état attempt against Hugo Chavez. Raul Castro is First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and was President of Cuba from 2008-2018. Roberto D’Aubuisson was a Salvadoran military officer, death squad leader, and co-founder of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) political party.

This collection contains photographs from the White House Photograph Office (WHPO) of memorial services and events relating to the Oklahoma City Bombing and the Columbine School Shooting. The Oklahoma City Bombing related material includes an event on April 5th, 1996 of President William Jefferson Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visiting the former site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building where they lay a plaque and deliver remarks, and an event on April 19th, 2000, of President William Jefferson deliverin remarks at the Oklahoma City Memorial. The Columbine School Shooting related material is of an event on May 20th, 1999 of President William Jefferson Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton attending a memorial service for the Columbine High School community in Littleton, Colorado.
