Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

The photographs and video recordings processed in this case from the White House Photograph Office (WHPO) and video recordings from the White House Television Office (WHTV) related to President Clinton and President Demirel of Turkey during the Clinton administration. President Clinton welcomed President Demirel to the White House in 1996 and President Clinton visited Turkey in 1999. Processing of this request included an official telephone call from President Clinton to President Suleyman Demirel of Turkey in 1996.

This collection consists of records relating to an August 18, 1999 telephone call between Turkish President Suleyman Demirel and President Clinton. A tremendous earthquake, later measured at 7.6 on the Richter scale, occurred near Izmit, Turkey in the early morning hours of August 17, 1999. The Turkish Government would later announce that an estimated 17,127 people were killed in the earthquake. President Clinton called President Demirel on August 18, 1999 to offer American assistance with earthquake recovery and to offer condolences on the loss of life

This collection consists of records relating to a June 11, 1999 telephone call between Turkish President Suleyman Demirel and President Clinton. On June 10, 1999, President Clinton attended a press briefing at the White House. During that press briefing, Clinton discussed the Military Technical Agreement on Kosovo and took questions from reporters. He also thanked several NATO partners for their role in Kosovo but did not mention Turkey. On June 11, 1999, Clinton called Turkish Prime Minister Ecevit and Turkish President Demirel.

This collection consists of records relating to a February 8, 1999 meeting with Turkish President Suleyman Demirel in Amman, Jordan. His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan died February 7, 1999. President Clinton traveled to Amman, Jordan for the funeral on February 8, 1999. A large number of foreign dignitaries and heads-of-state from around the world also attended including President Suleyman Demirel. There were no bilateral meetings held and President Clinton was provided briefing materials only in the case that he should happen to have a conversation rather than working toward a planned conversation. Though Clinton is noted as having greeted President Demirel there is no record that they had conversation on any topics of substance.

This collection consists of records relating to a March 29, 1996 meeting with Turkish President Suleyman Demirel at the White House. President Suleyman Demirel of Turkey came to the United States for a working trip March 27-30, 1996. While in the United States he traveled to Washington, D.C. where he held meetings with a number of government officials. On March 29, 1996, Demirel was invited to the White House and met with President Clinton in the oval office. During their meeting they discussed economic, military, and regional issues including Iraq and Cyprus.

Morningstar was going to be his Special Advisor to the President and to the Secretary of State on Assistance to the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union and Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to the NIS. Morningstar was already serving as acting in this role, having replaced Ambassador Thomas W. Simons, Jr. This request was specifically for records related to Morningstar and his work as Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union. More specifically this request was limited to Morningstar’s work in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This collection primarily focuses on the work of the United States in those countries, though some records related to the other countries of the NIS are present as well. This collection also explores in small part our relations with Russia, Iran, and Afghanistan and in relation to the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This collection ends in July 1998.

This collection consists of records related to Ambassador Simons and his work as Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union. The collection dates from January 1993 to July 1995 and does not cover Simon’s term as Ambassador to Pakistan. The Newly Independent States–or NIS–were defined, by law, as being: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Simons worked with all NIS countries but was heavily involved in working with Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan.

The Clinton Administration History Project describes in detail the accomplishments of President Clinton and his advisors for the period 1993-2001. The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) was established in 1988 with the signing of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988. Items responsive to this FOIA request were submitted to the White House by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in support of their chapter of the history. Open records in this collection include a review of drug counterintelligence architecture. This collection has a large number of pages closed for national security reasons.
