Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

This collection consists John Schnur’s Domestic Policy Council files. Schnur served as the Associate Director for Education Policy from 1998-1999. The White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy (WHCCAMP) was established by EO 13147 on March 7, 2000 for a two-year period in response to a growing public use of and interest in alternatives to standard medical care. These records cover WHCCAMP meetings and consist of minutes, testimony, and transcripts as well as planning and informational material.

This collection consists of the records of David Lussier from his time in the Domestic Policy Council. Lussier was a White House Fellow in 2000 who worked with education issues relating to school violence, Hispanic education, after-school programs, teacher quality, and the fiscal year 2001 budget. David Lussier's records include fact sheets, press releases, articles, memoranda, reports, publications, emails, draft legislation, speech transcripts, and speech drafts.
Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual
This collection consists of records from George Stephanopoulos’ files relating to communications and press strategy. Mr. Stephanopoulos began serving as de facto Press Secretary at the White House giving the daily press briefings. Later in 1993, he became the White House Communications Director and later became Senior Advisor to the President for Policy and Strategy. In 1995, he was Senior Advisor to the President and Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff for Policy. The Subject Files and the Chief of Staff files contain correspondence, memos, notes, speeches, talking points and press clippings. These records include material on affirmative action, budget, community empowerment, education, economy, human radiation experiments, taxes, and trade. The Communication files contain daily briefings and are arranged numerically.

This collection consists of records that relate to communications and/or press strategies for David Gergen, Special Advisor to President Clinton in 1993. This records include correspondence from CBS and United States Conference of Mayors and the Advertising Council, Inc., news articles, reports, and memoranda, notes, and talking points relating to preparation for press summits, weekly communications strategies, speech and media strategies, and meeting with various members of the domestic and international press.

She was the first woman and the second youngest person to hold such a position. This collection consists of Lyn Hogan’s records from her work in the Office of Policy Development relating to issues of child care and the child welfare system. There are a significant number of items relating to the child welfare system, including adoption, child abuse, foster care, the juvenile and family court system, and adoption legislation. The records include memos, publications, transcripts, academic reports and papers, correspondence, and articles.
