The collection consists of background information and information regarding scheduling for the Blue Ribbon Schools ceremony. The memoranda and talking points relate to the Department of Education and the Blue Ribbon Schools Elementary Programs. The lists consist of the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the schools selected for recognition, and the schedules relate to the draft agenda for the ceremony. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-0510-F) Millennium Matinee - June 12, 2000 - Millennium Council This collection contains e-mails, draft remarks, press releases, articles, invitations, and background information pertaining to remarks by the President and the First Lady at the Millennium Matinee event held at the White House on June 12, 2000. President and Mrs. Clinton created the Millennium Council in 1997 to oversee commemorative and celebratory activities in anticipation of the beginning of the 21st century. The 9th Millennium Evening, renamed Millennium Matinee due to its earlier time frame, was entitled “Exploration under the Seas-Beyond the Stars.” The event showcased scientific discoveries in the deep ocean and in outer space. Both the President and the First Lady gave brief remarks at the event in front of an audience of local schoolchildren, and participated in a question-and-answer session. In their remarks, President and Mrs. Clinton discussed American’s heritage of exploration, the importance of studying the oceans and outer space, as well as a recent draft report on climate change. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-0511-F) North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) This collection contains e-mails, draft remarks, background materials, and memoranda pertaining to the President’s remarks in support of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) at the Distinguished American Endorsement Event on November 2, 1993. During this event, well-respected individuals, including former President Jimmy Carter, publicly endorsed NAFTA. President Clinton followed these endorsements with his own argument in favor of the agreement. President Clinton outlined the economic and foreign policy benefits of the treaty and asked Americans to inform Congress of their support. Congress passed the necessary legislation later that month. The NSC Cables contain two documents sent by Secretary of Defense William Cohen. Both involve Department of Defense press briefings in which UFO’s and flying saucers are mentioned. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-0527-F) Area 51 This collection consists of email and cables concerning “Area 51.” “Area 51” is an unofficial title that often refers to an area in southern Nevada containing United States Air Force (USAF) facilities. The USAF does not recognize owning or operating any facility regarded as “Area 51.” They do recognize operations at the Nellis Range Complex which includes an Operating Location near Groom Lake, Nevada. However, much of the information regarding activities at these sites remains classified. Additionally, an email forwarded by Margaret M. Suntum to twenty-one people, including Mike McCurry, dated April 6, 1998 contains an internal transcript of President Clinton’s remarks at the National Newspaper Association Reception in the East Room of the White House March 20, 1998. The collection also includes biographical information on Stephen Hawking and a copy of a lecture delivered by Stephen Hawking for the White House Millennium Lectures. This collection describes attitudes on intervention in Rwanda in 1994, humanitarian relief efforts, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and President Clinton's trip to Rwanda in 1998. The collection consists of agendas, articles, background information, bulletins, cables, correspondence, drafts, emails, memoranda, press briefings, reports, and schedules. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-0647-F) Genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina - Srebrenica massacre (1995) This collection consists of records describing the ethnic cleansing that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina around the town of Srebrenica in July 1995. The massacre of 8,000 Bosnian Muslims that occurred in Srebrenica is the largest mass murder in Europe since World War II. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) deemed it an act of genocide. This collection consists of memoranda, reports, handwritten notes, newspaper articles, correspondence, talking points, cables, and press guidance. A highlight of the records concerns the efforts of the United States and its European allies to bring the perpetrators of genocidal crimes to justice. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-0650-F Segment 1) U.S. Intervention in Haiti, 1994 In 1991, a Haitian military regime overthrew the elected President, Jean-Bertrand Arisitide. The US military intended to forcibly remove this regime in 1994 via Operation Uphold Democracy. As US armed forces prepared to engage in this Operation in September 1994, a diplomatic mission led by President Carter convinced the Haitian military regime to allow President Aristide to return to power. The diplomatic mission consisted of President Carter, Senator Sam Nunn, and General Colin Powell. Operation Uphold Democracy then switched missions from a combat to a peace-keeping and nation-building mission. The new mission of Operation Uphold Democracy lasted from September 19, 1994 to March 31, 1995. The Operation consisted of U.S. troops and the UN organized Multinational Force (MNF). This collection consists of bulletins, cables, correspondence, email, memoranda, news clippings, press releases, reports, and talking points related to the 1994 U.S. intervention in Haiti associated with Operation Uphold Democracy. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-0770-F) Ira Magaziner - Health Care Reform - Office of Policy Development This collection consists of reports, memoranda, correspondence, news clippings, and schedules from the files of Ira Magaziner, Senior Advisor to the President for Policy Development. Magaziner assisted in implementing President Clinton’s Health Care Reform initiatives by coordinating policy development for the Task Force on National Health Care Reform.
