Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

This collection consists of records relating to the 1993 Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC). The Inaugural Committee was responsible for the planning and staging of all the official inaugural events. They worked to prepare guest lists and invitations, they distributed tickets, selected parade units, selected ball and gala entertainers, prepared event lists, provided housing and transportation, built parade reviewing stands and bleachers, arranged the media coverage, authorized the concessions, and marketed a variety of commemorative items including the official program and official medal. The records include memos, press releases, news clips, reports, correspondence, notes, and papers.

It was part of a longer trip that included a stop in Japan.

This collection consists of email sent to Todd Stern concerning the issue of climate change during the Clinton Administration. Todd Stern served as Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary in the White House from 1993 to 1999. In that capacity, he acted as senior negotiator at the Kyoto Protocol and Buenos Aires talks. The Automated Records Management System email in this collection primarily consists of press releases and press briefings sent to a distribution list of White House employees, including Stern. The most substantive emails include memos and correspondence concerning climate change related topics such as Kyoto Protocol, Clean Air Partnerships, Green Bonds, Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV), Electricity Restructuring, and Energy Smart Schools. The collection also contains notes related to the 1998 Buenos Aires Climate Change Conference, articles concerning Arctic warming, State of the Union drafts, as well as records from diplomatic strategy meetings and congressional outreach meetings.

The records include the Climate Change Weekly Reports written by Stern for the period January-May 1999. A wealth of information about the emerging and topic of climate change can be gleaned from the papers—press coverage, diplomatic situation, congressional action, and scientific evidence vis-à-vis the subject at hand. The collection includes extensive handwritten comments by President Clinton. The material located here includes reports, memoranda, correspondence, notes, newspaper articles, and drafts.
